Thomas the Tank Engine

Thomas is the No. 1 blue engine. He is a cheeky little engine who often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas' world and soon he’s bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line. Thomas works hard and he always strives to be a Really Useful Engine.

Fun fact!
Thomas is based on the London Brighton and South Coast Railway 0-6-0 E2 with extended side tanks.

Edward the Blue Engine

Edward is the No. 2 blue engine. He is one of the older and wiser engines on Sir Topham Hatt's railway. Edward is kind and a good friend to everyone. When the other engines misbehave, it's Edward that Sir Topham Hatt turns to in order to calm everyone down and restore order.

Fun Fact! Edward did not have a number on his side in the first original stories. It was only after Book 6 in the Railway Series that Edward received his #2. Edward is based on a 4-4-0 locomotive.

Henry the Green Engine

Henry is the No. 3 green engine. He is a long and fast engine and has a thoroughbred look. Like all thoroughbreds, he tends to be a little high-strung and a bit of a worrier. But on any day he'll give any engine a run for its money.

Fun Fact! Before his shape was changed, Henry had to have special coal brought in so he could run properly. Henry is based on a Stainer 4-6-0 Class 5 engine.

Gordon the Big Express Engine

Gordon is the No. 4 blue engine who pulls the express. As the senior member of the engine family, he is the fastest and most powerful of Sir Topham Hatt's team - and he knows it. He's goodhearted, always willing to forgive, and uses his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble.

Fun Fact! When the Queen visited the Island of Sodor, Sir Topham Hatt asked Gordon to take her around. Gordon is based on a Gresley Liner A3 4-6-2 engine.

James the Red Engine

James is the No. 5 red engine. He is a medium-sized engine whose six driving wheels are not as big as Gordon's but not as small as Thomas'. He has a fine scarlet coat and brass dome and thinks of himself as a Really Splendid Engine. Occasionally this leads to misguided ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a distinguished engine, invariably landing James in trouble.

Fun Fact! James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches and freight cars. James is based on a Hughes Class 28 superheated 2-6-0 tender engine.

Percy the Small Engine

Percy is the No. 6 green engine. He is the junior member of Sir Topham Hatt’s railway. He is quite content puffing around the yard with no particular desire for adventure in the world outside. Percy is Thomas' best friend and his favorite job is delivering the mail. He is always happy to help and other engines sometimes take advantage of his good nature.

Fun Fact! Percy is an 0-4-0 saddle tank engine based on engines from the Avonside Engine Company.

Toby the Tram Engine

Toby is the No. 7 brown tram engine. He’s square – old-fashioned both in looks and nature. Toby’s always happy to work and is usually found on the Quarry line with his faithful coach, Henrietta.

Fun Fact! Sir Topham Hatt brought Toby to his railway to help out with Thomas' branch line. Toby is based on a steam driven 0-6-0 tram engine.

Emily the Beautiful Engine

Emily is a beautiful emerald green engine with shiny paintwork and gleaming brass fittings. She can be a little bossy and think she knows best, but is always ready to help a friend. She is the newest member of the Steam Team.

Fun Fact! After Emily rescued Oliver and Toad, who were stuck on the tracks, Sir Topham Hatt rewarded her with a brand new pair of coaches. Emily is based on a GNR Stirling Single.

Bash

Bash and Dash are mischievous twins who always finish each others sentences. They are playful and eager but get things wrong because they don't have any rules on Misty Island.

Fun Fact! Bash is a logging loco and runs on oil and wood. Bash is based on the Bear Harbor Lumber Company's locomotive #1

Ferdinand

Ferdinand is a gentle giant. He is a bigger and slower engine who is able to make special tweeting sounds with his whistles. He runs on wood and oil and can often be heard saying "that's right".

Fun Fact! Ferdinand is a logging loco and is based on a Climax Class C logging locomotive.

Salty

Salty, The Dockside Diesel, is a hard working engine who loves to tell tales of his life by the sea. He will occasionally work in the quarry and other areas on the island, but is happiest down by the docks. Salty is a little rough around the edges but has a great big heart and will always rush to aid of any engine, be it steamie or fellow diesel.

Fun Fact! Salty worked on an unnamed coastal railway for many years, where he acquired his vast collection of stories and songs, before coming to Sodor.

Victor

Victor is the manager of The Sodor Steamworks. He is very busy engine, always on the run – fixing broken-down engines, finding useful parts and supervising Kevin. Victor has a heart of gold and a good sense of humor and is a respected manager by all the engines. It is Victor who keeps the Island of Sodor steaming along!

Fun Fact! Victor is based on 1173, an 0-4-0ST-T locomotive that worked on sugar plantations in Cuba.

Kevin

Whiff

Whiff’s has a look and a smell all of his own! He's a cheery, little tank engine with a very special job - he collects rubbish! Whiff doesn't care about his appearance, he only cares that he gets the job done. Whiff loves collecting rubbish and doesn’t notice the turned up noses he passes along the way.

Scruff the Scruncher

Scruff is Whiff's helper at Whiff's Waste Dump. He's small, square and looks like a diesel. Scruff hates being clean.

Fun Fact! Scruff HATES being clean! He's scared of brushes! Scruff is based on no. 9369 "Musketeer", a Sentinel 100 HP "BE Type" chain-driven vertical-boiler industrial strength steam locomotive built in 1946.

Spencer

A striking silver express engine, Spencer is just about the shiniest, sleekest engine the Island of Sodor has ever seen. Spencer is very strong and very fast - and he makes sure the other engines know it!

Fun Fact! Spencer was brought to the Island as the private engine of the visiting Duke and Duchess of Boxford. Spencer is based on an LNER Class A4.

Rocky

RockyRocky is the gentle giant of Sodor. He is a very strong crane who wants to be everyone’s best friend. Rocky does the heavy lifting on the island, like picking up derailed engines and putting them back on track!

Fun Fact! Rocky has no engine, so he relies on other engines to pull him wherever he is needed. Rocky is based on a Ransome and Rapier 45-ton steam crane, built around 1945

Charlie

Charlie is a small and playful engine from the Mainland who likes to have a lot of fun. He is always up for an adventure! While Charlie can be a little mischievous, he's always ready to help out a friend in need.

Arthur

Picture
Arthur is a big tank engine who shunts trucks and pulls freight. He is as excited to work for The Fat Controller as he is proud of his famous spotless record. Only time will tell if that record will stay as spotless as Arthur would like.

Fun Fact! Arthur is based on an LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2 tank engine developed for the London Midland and Scottish Railway.

Duck

Picture
Duck is a cheerful, busy engine. He's only a small tank engine, but he'll take no nonsense from larger engines who try to order him about.

Fun Fact! Duck's real name is Montague. Duck is based on a 0-6-0 pannier tank of the 5700 class.

BoCo

Picture
BoCo is a decent diesel with a sense of humor. He originally came to the Island of Sodor on loan, but ended up staying.

Fun Fact! Boco is based on a Metropolitan Vickers Co-Bo, class 28, type 2, introduced by British Rail in 1958 with an electric transmission.

Bill

Picture
Bill and Ben are twin engines and identical in every way. Bill wears a huge devious grin most of the day, and spends his time working between the clay pits of the Sodor China Clay Company and the Harbor.

Fun Fact! After a rockslide at the Quarry, it was the quick thinking of Bill, along with his brother Ben, that rescued all of the workers and brought them to safety. Bill is a low-slung 0-4-0 Saddle-tank engine built by WT Bagnall of Stafford.

Ben

Ben and Bill are twin engines, and identical in every way. Ben enjoys being mischievous and teasing the other engines in the Railway.

Donald the Scottish Twin no. 9

Donald and his brother Douglas are twins. Donald hates to be parted from his brother, and loves to play practical jokes on the other engines. Donald and Douglas love to play practical jokes, especially impersonating one another. They were fitted with nameplates to specifically end this element of their humour.

Fun Fact! Donald is the #9 engine. Donald is a 0-6-0 tender engine based on the 812 class built for the Caledonian railway.

Douglas the Scottish Twin no. 10

Douglas and his brother Donald are twins. The Fat Controller had only ordered one goods engine, but when both Donald and Douglas showed up he decided to keep them both. Donald and Douglas love to play practical jokes, especially impersonating one another. They were fitted with nameplates to specifically end this element of their humour.

Fun Fact! Douglas is the #10 engine. Douglas is a 0-6-0 tender engine based on the 812 class built for the Caledonian railway.

Hiro

Hiro was the first steam engine to arrive on the Island of Sodor and was originally know as the "Master of the Railway". Hiro is one of the oldest and strongest engines on the Island.

Fun Fact! Hiro is based on a Japanese National Railways Class D51 built by Kawasaki.

Annie and Clarabel are Thomas' faithful coaches and help him carry passengers around the Island of Sodor. Annie only carries passengers. Clarabel is a 'composite' coach. She has two sections, one for passengers and the other for luggage.

Fun Fact! Annie is always the first coach pulled by Thomas and travels facing him. Clarabel always travels behind Annie facing away from Thomas.

Cranky

Despite his gruff nature, Cranky always keeps things moving at Brendam Docks. His high and mighty attitude often annoys the other engines. From his lofty perch he sees the comings and goings of his part of the island. Cranky knows that if he ever gets too big for his crane hook, the engines have ways of bringing him back to earth.

Fun Fact! While he's almost always down at the docks, if he's needed elsewhere on the island, Cranky can be moved, but it's not easy!

Diesel 10

Diesel 10 is a renegade diesel engine on the Island of Sodor who is 10 out of 10 for brutal strength and devious deeds, and is out to destroy the harmony of The Fat Controller's Railway.

Fun Fact! When we last saw Diesel 10, he was at a cliff top over the Search and Rescue Centre. We can only guess he's up to no good.

Dodge

Dodge and his brother Splatter are Diesel 10's sidekicks. Dodge likes to help out Diesel 10 in his plan to destroy The Fat Controller's Railway, but also gets pleasure watching Diesel 10's plans backfire.

Fun Fact! Dodge and Splatter are based on BR Class 08 Diesel Shunters.

Splatter

Skarloey

Skarloey is a very chipper, hard worker, who shares his duties with Rheneas. He is a proper engine who is dedicated to his narrow gauge line and always eager to help out when he's needed.

Fun Fact! Skarloey is a narrow gauge industrial tank engine, based on those built in England in the 1860's.


Rheneas

Picture
Rheneas is one of the oldest engines on the island and works on the narrow gauge railway. He is a tough little engine but, because of his age, often breaks down. Even still, Rheneas works hard and upholds the fine reputation of the railway system. Because of this, he is well respected by both engines and drivers alike.

Fun Fact! When the Railway was in jeopardy of closing, it was Rheneas' heroics which saved the line, and brought his passengers home, earning him the nickname Gallant Old Engine. He is based on a narrow gauge, industrial tank engine built in England in the 1860's.

Sir Handel

Sir Handel is one of the oldest engines on the Narrow Gauge Railway. He generally is of the opinion that he knows best and should be the boss. This occasionally leads him to have troubles with other engines and the trucks. Still, he always gets the job done.

Fun Fact! Sir Handel's name was originally Falcon, but was changed when he came to Sir Topham Hatt's railway. He is based on a narrow gauge, industrial tank engine built in England in the 1870's.

Peter Sam

Picture
Peter Sam is a happy and kind engine, but is a little vulnerable and often teased by the others. A hard worker by nature, Peter Sam seldom grumbles about late hours or extra work. Peter Sam works on Mr. Percival's Narrow Gauge Railway.

Fun Fact! Peter Sam was actually known as Stuart, but his name was changed when he came to Sir Topham Hatt's railway. He is based on a narrow gauge industrial tank engine built in England in the 1920's.

Rusty

Picture
Rusty is the only diesel engine on the narrow gauge railway. He is a very self-assured and dedicated worker with a huge heart. Rusty loves adventure and especially loves his two-toned horn.

Fun Fact! Rusty was brought to the railway to help out Sir Handel and Peter Sam while Skarloey was away. He is based on a four wheel Ruston and Hornsby diesel engine built around 1940.

Duncan

Picture
Duncan works on Mr. Percival's narrow gauge railway. He means well but will "Rock 'n Roll" along the rails whenever the mood takes him. Duncan has a great big heart but is a little misguided.

Fun Fact! Duncan is the tallest of the narrow gauge engines. He is based on a narrow gauge, industrial tank engine built in Scotland at the time of the first World War.

Fearless Freddie

Freddie is an old engine working on Mr. Percival's narrow gauge railway. He knows every track and siding in the hills. He's not scared of anything, which is why he's called "Fearless Freddie"

Mighty Mac

Picture
Mighty Mac is two engines in one! He is Mighty on one end and Mac on the other-- making him one of the most unusual engines working on the Sodor Narrow Gauge Railway. When Mighty and Mac work together, Mighty Mac is the strongest engine on the Railway. But when they don’t, Mighty and Mac pull each other backwards and forwards, only to end up right where they began.

Fun Fact! Mighty Mac is based on a Fairlie locomotive with added bufferbeams with low-set buffers and couplings

Ali the Rap Engine

Ali is from Iraq, and is a very cool and fun engine. He has a cap over his funnel, his name Ali on his tanks and a bling-bling gem round his face.
He always calls Edward "Eddie", he doesn't like working, and he has a crush on every girl he meets!
He's rapping almost all the time, and he has over 50 unwritten songs. And he remembers them!

Fun fact:
Ali has a Iraq girlfriend called Lizzie.

Lizzie

Lizzie is a light blue tank engine. She's never seen, just mentioned. She's Ali's girlfriend from Iraq. She is said to be cute but hardheaded! She's also said to be just like Ali, so she must love to rap.

Stinky

Stinky is a smelly and dirty engine. He has glasses like Whiff. He is always happy to visit Whiff's Waste Dump to see his friend Whiff. At first, Scruff didn't like Stinky, but after a while, they became the best of friends. He has a flatbed called Pro-Ton with him all the time.

Fun facts!
Stinky is often referred to as "Stinky the Nerd".
Stinky has a lot of inventions, including "Insane Smell" and  "Growing Powder"! Once, he used this on Percy to make him taller.

Pro-Ton

Pro
Pro-Ton is Stinky's reliable truck which follows him all the time.
Stinky uses Pro-Ton to keep his experiments. Also, they make the experiments. That's why they have hooks and claws.
Pro-Ton is a mix of a flatbed and a truck with added cranearms.

Pro is the flatbed. He can see what he's doing with the experiments, and listens to Stinky when he tells him what to do. He also controls the cranes.

Ton is the truck. He keeps the stuff to make the experiments safe. He likes to call himself 'The eyes on the back'.

Fun fact!:
Pro-Ton is one of the few trucks which isn't troublesome.

Sir Topham Hatt (The Fat Controller)

The Fat Controller is the director of the Railway and is responsible for making sure the engines are always Right on Time and Really Useful. He has a firm but kind manner in dealing with the engines and staff, and has risen through the ranks from a railway engineer to his current position.

Fun Fact! The Fat Controller was awarded a knighthood for his services to the railway industry.
